Camille's question: "What does a high level of HCG beta mean?"

The answer of Anna Roy, liberal and hospitable midwife in Paris

  • Chorionic gonadotrophic hormone, HCG, is secreted only in pregnant women from the beginning of embryo development around the ninth day of pregnancy. She is being tested using a urine or blood pregnancy test.
  • The level of HCG, determined by a blood test, varies according to women, their age and the stage of pregnancy. A high-dose test may indicate that the pregnancy started before the expected date. It can also mean that a multiple pregnancy, at least twin, is possibly beginning. This hypothesis can only be confirmed after an ultrasound examination. It is also possible that a high rate of HCG is a sign of risk of abnormalities, such as trisomy 21. But only the opinion of a specialist based on various investigative examinations can confirm this eventuality.
  • No self-diagnostics coming out of the analysis laboratory, with a high HCG dosage result! These results depend on many parameters, not necessarily serious and only a specialist is able to analyze.
